The protest comes several days after a military coup on September 16, by General Gilbert Diendere, an aide to ousted president Blaise Compaore and members of Compaore's powerful Presidential Security Regiment (RSP) burst into the cabinet meeting room snatching the country's interim president Michel Kafando and Prime Minister Isaac Zida, and two ministers (Augustin Loada and Rene Bagoro).
